On Live at Montreux
2012, her latest live offering and first such collection in nearly a
decade, Alanis Morissette does a good job balancing her set list with all
things both new and old, including a healthy dose of material off her latest
studio release Havoc and Bright Lights
(“Guardian,” “Woman Down,” “Numb,” “Havoc”) as well as memorable cuts off her
seminal 1995 release Jagged Little Pill (“All
I Really Want,” “You Oughta Know,” “Hand In My Pocket,” “You Learn”). Morissette
handing over vocal duties on her classic “Ironic” makes the track a highlight
of the night, as is hearing the now 38-year-old singer belt out the powerful
words that comprise “Head Over Feet.” Morissette only gets stronger as she delves
deeper into the night, with the penultimate “Uninvited” amping up the crowd one
last time before the night ends with the apt “Thank U,” a perfect sendoff from
Morissette to this worthy crowd. And though there is surely an argument to be
made here for a different track to close this night, “Thank U” is perhaps the best
way for Morissette to express her gratitude to these fans. Unfortunately. this is where the most glaring difference between the CD and DVD comes into play, as the pre-encore "Uninvited" is left off the CD version, which, honestly, causes the ends of the CD's live set to lack a bit. Still, Live at Montreux 2012 is truly a special release that will more
than please fans of Morissette from any era, one that proves her sonic entries
are the definition of timeless.
