Free Music Weekend! Lightning Bolt, Twerps, ESP, WHY?, GRMLN

Lightning Bolt

MP3: "King Candy" -

Since forming in 1994, Lightning Bolt has taken a zig zag path to recording, playing and touring. Following in this pattern is the release of Oblivion Hunter, a collection of the band's epic recording sessions over the last few years. Oblivion Hunter is a real cool time - loose, hard and loopy.

MP3: "He's In Stock" -

Cheeky, charming and touchingly direct, Melbourne foursome Twerps are rising from humble beginnings to become international lo-fi pop champions. Their debut EP, released on Chapter Music in late 2009, featured nine short, simple but incredibly infectious tracks, recorded by Eddy Current Suppression Ring/Total Control guitarist Mikey Young.

MP3: "Serenade" -

ESP is a new Los Angeles-based trio whose primary interest is, as their name implies, Extra Sensory Perception. The group explores this phenomena through their own synesthetic, synth-laden dreamscapes which literally overflow with hypercolored visuals. This is ESP, the sights, sounds and sensory overload of the West Coast cosmos.

MP3: "Jonathan's Hope" -

Nipping at the ragged heels of their eagerly devoured Sod in the Seed EP, WHY? at last unleash their fifth long-player, a meticulous work of morbid fascination and offbeat romanticism dubbed Mumps, etc. Though there is a mysterious sickness (perhaps of the mind) that lurks about these thirteen songs, one might also imagine the title as describing the musical state of these three Midwestern men as they bring their sound into focus.

Born in Kyoto, Japan and raised in Southern California, 19-year-old Yoodoo Park is the man behind indie rock outfit GRMLN. Entitled Explore, Yoodoo's debut EP is just that: a young artist inspired by the scenery of his coastal surroundings, discovering and developing his singular voice to create a wistful palette of blues, greens and golds.
