Derek & the Darling Get Remixed

Before Derek Nicoletto started his new band, the electro/rock/pop outfit DEREK AND THE DARLING, he wrote a song called "Hustler with a Rescue Plan," detailing where he was mentally and emotionally after the breakup of his former band, Telling on Trixie. Aside from being the opening track of his soon-to-be-released EP ROCKFACE (release date: April 27, 2010 via 7 Trick Pony Records), it has also been pegged as the first single and video (currently in post-production and scheduled for late April).

A performance artist enrolled in the acclaimed NYC improv comedy troupe Upright Citizens Brigade and a visual and music artist as well, Derek drew influences from his own creative background when he was writing the song. " In September of 2009, I was at the beginning of a new phase in my life," he remembers. "So, I wrote about who I am and where I was at the moment. Visual art came to mind and I recalled my appreciation of the Rembrandt drawing Beggar in a High Hat which I saw during my trip to Shanghai, China during the Rijksmuseum Exposition. Then my mind traveled to Toulouse-Lautrec's Salon de la Rue des Moulins, hookers in a lounge...and then instinctively, I was off to the piano."

The resulting song, "Hustler with a Rescue Plan," is an anthemic pop/rock song with a sly groove and a big arena-sound that's pumped full of adrenalinalized guitars and a big, beefy beat. "For me, this song is three shots of espresso," he explains. "It jolts me into action. It's the life I signed up for - triumphs and struggle - and I love it!" The song caught the ear of NYC underground remixologist Black Cloud who has worked with artists as diverse as IAMX, Harland and Veil Veil Vanish. "I wanted to give the song a bit of a sneaky, kind of shifty vibe," adds Black Cloud. "There's a very visceral tension between the vocals of Derek and Sammi [Garett, co-vocalist], so I wanted to emphasize that with different textures in the mix, and it worked out pretty damn well!" Derek reinforces, "I took a lot of care with my words and the proclamation I was making with this song, so I was pleased to hear how Black Cloud kept the verses and choruses wholly intact, preserving all of the song's intention.... And I love that nasty, fat, bouncy bass!"

Derek and the Darling are Derek Nicoletto (vocals, synthesizer), Sammi Garett (vocals, guitar, percussion), Mike Fisher (guitar, synthesizer, Ableton, background vocals) and Will Haywood Smith (drums). Rockface was produced by Jamie Siegel (Taking Back Sunday, Kid Cudi, The Roots) and will be released on April 27, 2010 on 7 Trick Pony Records. Excited for its release, Derek concludes, "It's hard for me to keep a secret even when it's NOT the sum of my life for the past six months. That I have to sit on this music until April 27th, is, for me, torture."

A NYC record release party is planned for Thursday, May 6th at Bowery Electric (327 Bowery, NYC) at 9:00pm.
