Spoiler alert – the best song off of Asking Alexandria’s Under The Influence: A Tribute To The Legends of Hard Rock covers EP is not a cover song, it’s the lone original included, the bands newest single “Run Free,” a track which features AA’s breakdown and hook-laden delivery and whirling-dervish meld of all things electronic, atmospheric, emotional and downright heavy. The rest of Under The Influence: A Tribute To The Legends of Hard Rock is a mixed bag however, as frontman Danny Worsnop’s vocal aesthetic clearly lends itself better to some covers (Journey’s “Separate Ways”) better than others (Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again”). The bands rendition of Def Leppard’s “Hysteria” fall somewhere in the middle as its good not great, doing just enough to avoid coming across flat, and the bands take on Motley Crue’s “Kickstart My Heart” is simply puzzling – you’ll have to hear it for yourself. Cover albums are almost always worth a listen, but when it comes to Under The Influence: A Tribute To The Legends of Hard Rock you might be better off just seeking out “Run Free.”
