Middle Class Rut Wins Crowd, Outshines 30 Seconds to Mars in the Falls

Who: Middle Class Rut, 30 Seconds to Mars
Where: Rapids Theatre
When: 2/2/11

I have to be honest, going into 30 Seconds to Mars and Middle Class Rut (www.myspace.com/middleclassrut), February 2 at the Rapids Theatre in Niagara Falls, NY, I did not expect the direct support to outshine the headliner, but that’s exactly what happened on this night. A part of me was thinking third time’s a charm for 30STM, but that couldn’t have been farther from the truth as the band had the stage literally stolen from them by their opening act, Middle Class Rut. 30STM comprising the majority of their set of new material from 2009’s This Is War was to be expected, but playing no songs off their brilliant eponymous debut was not to be, and made me write off the set for the most part, but that’s a story for another day.

I was looking forward to seeing MC Rut, I’ll admit. I was intrigued to see what the duo (Zack Lopez and Sean Stockham) could do given a large stage (which the Rapids provided in spades), and what they did was win over those in attendance with their surprising (to me at least) stage presence, firing off one garage-inspired rock tune after another, filling the air of the Rapids Theatre with most of the material off of their 2010 tremendous long player No Name No Color. Their set was a real raucous rock show – no frills, no wasted space – one that this crowd, and me specifically, appreciated to the hilt.

Listen, MTV may be about as far from musical relevance as you can possibly get, but there’s a good reason the one-lauded network chose MC Rut as one their ‘Artists to Watch in 2011.’

Hey MC Rut, come back to Buffalo just as soon as you can. We’d love to have you.
